Standard 4: Human Resource Leadership
School executives will ensure that the school is a professional learning community. School executives will ensure that processes and systems are in place that result in the recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development and retention of a high-performing staff. The school executive must engage and empower accomplished teachers in a distributive leadership manner, including support of teachers in day-to-day decisions such as discipline, communication with parents, and protecting teachers from duties that interfere with teaching. They also must practice fair and consistent evaluation of teachers. The school executive must engage teachers and other professional staff in conversations to plan their career paths and support district succession planning.
The artifacts provided below will demonstrate proficiency towards the North Carolina School Executive Standards. Artifacts represent residencies at two schools in Wilson County: Elm City Elementary and Wells Elementary.
Element IVa. Professional Development/Learning Communities: The school executive ensures that the school is a professional learning community.
At Elm City Elementary, I was able to attend PLCs frequently. My task at the PLC shown was to go through the walkthrough tool, provide insight about what was being looked for, and provide other essential expectations for the year.
I also frequently attended PLCs at Wells Elementary. I was in charge of sharing new and current expectations after returning from Winter break. I created an agenda in order to communicate important information about expectations for classroom work, Beaver Academy intervention time, lesson plans, field trips, etc. during grade level PLCs.

Element IVb. Recruiting, Hiring, Placing and Mentoring to Staff: The school executive establishes processes and systems in order to ensure a high-quality, high-performing staff.
I had the opportunity to participate in hiring many staff members at Elm City Elementary including the counselor, multiple teacher assistants, and two kindergarten positions. My role was to ask questions from the questionnaire the principal provided and to provide feedback in the post-conversations we had. I also had the opportunity to walk through the process of placing the teacher assistants where we believed they could be best utilized.
Also while at Elm City Elementary, I was able to mentor a new kindergarten teacher. I took the teacher over to another school in the county to observe the practices of three other kindergarten teachers. I created a "look for" form for the teacher to use while completing the observations; the teacher was very appreciative to have a guide to follow.

Element IVc. Teacher and Staff Evaluation: The school executive evaluates teachers and other staff in a fair and equitable manner with the focus on improving performance and, thus, student achievement.
During my residency at Elm City Elementary, I was able to participate in peer observations. I used the pre-conference questionnaire provided by my principal to conduct pre-conferences.
When completing official observations at Wells Elementary, I utilized my Madeline Hunter training to create a post-conference questionnaire to discuss the observed lesson. In addition to this form, I made sure to discuss any suggestions I had in order to increase student achievement and understanding.
During my residency at Wells Elementary, I was in charge of completing observations and monitoring professional developmental plans for nineteen staff members.
