Standard 5: Managerial Leadership
School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The school executive must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decisions so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.
The artifacts provided below will demonstrate proficiency towards the North Carolina School Executive Standards. Artifacts represent residencies at two schools in Wilson County: Elm City Elementary and Wells Elementary.
Element Va. School Resources and Budget: The school executive establishes budget processes and systems which are focused on, and result in, improved student achievement.
During our budget class, I was able to examine the budget for a school in Johnston County, determine the needs of the students based on data, and create an expenditure plan. The Benson Middle School Budget Project PowerPoint outlines my decisions, money spent, and money that was left for future purchases.
One of the first task I completed with the principal at Elm City Elementary was to examine the available Title I funds and determine how to allocate the funds. This was my first experience with budget codes, additional teacher allotment, and parent academies.
In addition to allocating the funds, it is mandatory that Elm City Elementary host a Title I Annual Meeting. I was able to provide input to the presentation and was present at this meeting as information was shared with parents/guardians and the community in regards to funds and resources.

Element Vb. Conflict Management and Resolution: The school executive effectively manages the complexity of human interactions so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
An area of concern at Elm City was the special area teachers having more non-instructional time than the other teachers. My task was to come up with a schedule where the special area teachers would provide additional support to the grade levels that received less support from teacher assistants during the day. Not only did the additional support from the special area teachers help in the classrooms in regards to student achievement, but it eased feelings of inequity.
When transitioning the Elm City library books to lexiles, the media center had to be shut down. I had to create an alternative schedule for teachers to follow that still allowed them to have planning time while their students still had a special area class. This prevented the teachers from losing planning on the day that they were impacted.
At Wells Elementary, we had a specific student that was having a hard time with redirection and conflict. After sitting down with the parents, I came up with a redirection plan for all the staff that interacted with the student to follow.

Element Vc. Systematic Communication: The school executive designs and utilizes various forms of formal and informal communication so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
One of the most critical stakeholder groups to make sure you have various forms of communication for are the parents/guardians. While at Elm City Elementary, I was in charge of many initiatives centered around communication. I created a monthly newsletter: The Eagle's Nest. For orientation night, I created a form with QR codes to get parent involved with Elm City's Facebook, Twitter, Remind program, and school website. A major focus of Elm City Elementary was student attendance; the first step with cutting down on student absenteeism was to send home a letter that I created that had information about student absences and recommendations.
At Wells Elementary, Class Dojo was an efficient way to communicate with the majority of the parents. The artifact provided is an example of how I systematically communicated with parents through Class Dojo.

Element Vd. School Expectations for Students and Staff: The school executive develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students and staff.
While at Wells Elementary, I was the testing coordinator. In addition to having verbal communications with staff about testing expectations, numerous emails were sent out with testing reminders. This document provided was also put in staff mailboxes.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) was utilized at Wells Elementary. This initiative/program was in the starting phases when I arrived so I helped put some new incentives in place for students and also created a PBIS bulletin board based on the school's PBIS matrix. The students knew the expectations because they had been posted on the matrix, on the bulletin board, and throughout other areas of the school.
